Transformation of Renal Pathophysiology Lecture
Transformation of Renal Pathophysiology Lecture
Students at the Medical University of Sofia faced a challenge - traditional PowerPoint lectures didn’t quite do justice to the complexities of Renal Pathophysiology. Our team set out to transform the learning experience.
We’ve said goodbye to traditional slide-based lectures and introduced a fresh approach. Our eLearning solution combines interactive modules, engaging visuals, and immersive content. But we didn’t stop there. We also created a safe space for students to practice decision-making skills in real-world scenarios.

Want to learn more about the transformation?
Our project began with a deep-dive analysis of a traditional 80-slide PowerPoint presentation used in renal pathophysiology lectures at the university.
We thoroughly examined the content, learner personas, and the specific challenges faced by our students regarding this complex topic. This led us to completely reimagine and recreate a holistic learning journey designed to meet diverse learning needs and styles.
The How:
To better grasp the challenges students were encountering, we proposed conducting a survey to gain insights into learners’ perspectives and their preferred learning style. Analyzing the survey results, we then implemented a scenario-based eLearning approach. This approach would immerse students in real-world situations throughout the course, enabling them to make decisions and witness the consequences in a low-risk environment.
Pre-Work:
We introduced an engaging eLearning module that places learners directly into decision-making scenarios involving patient care. This interactive approach not only grabs attention but also introduces learners to key concepts that are covered in the upcoming lecture, providing them with practical context and stimulating critical thinking about real-world applications.
Lecture:
The main lecture at the university remains the same. However, the pre-work is designed to prime students with specific questions and scenarios, enhancing their engagement and comprehension during the lecture. This approach ensures they are actively connecting new information with the scenarios they've already explored.
Post-Work:
After the lecture, students transition into another eLearning module. This post-lecture module is crafted to be modern and visually engaging, reinforcing the concepts learned during the lecture through further interactive, scenario-based activities. It serves to solidify the learner's understanding and encourage a deeper reflection on the material.
Practical Exercise:
Finally, we designed a practical, hands-on exercise that can be conducted in groups or individually, with or without the aid of an assistant professor. This part of the journey utilizes cards featuring different medical cases to spur discussion and brainstorming. It’s designed to be fun and engaging, encouraging students to apply their knowledge in a collaborative environment while also enhancing their teamwork and communication skills.
Each component of this redesigned learning pathway is detailed in our comprehensive Learning Guide, ensuring a cohesive and integrated educational experience. This holistic approach not only deepens understanding and engagement but also prepares our students for real-world medical challenges, making learning both effective and enjoyable.
